There is nothing fun about “fun questions.” And fun questions do not reduce stress.
Some high-pressured colleges have introduced "fun questions” to make the application process less stressful. If an application asks the applicant what he or she does for fun, don’t be fooled into
writing anything that makes you sound lazy, passive, a wannabe, a follower, a partier. Make sure you stress constructive activities that can be accommodated by the university to which you are applying.

In previous applications, Penn has asked, “Tell us what you like to do for fun." MIT asked, "Tell us about something you do simply for the pleasure of it." Harvey Mudd asked, "What fun, cool, or interesting things about you won't fit into the categories on the application? Feel welcome to be clever or funny."
If anything, these Band-Aid questions bring greater stress to the applicants with whom I have spoken, as they struggle to figure out what fun they should speak of. After all, they observe that everyone they know who has been admitted to these colleges had no time for “fun” in high school, having pulled many all-nighters and faced week-ends and vacations filled with homework. In order to be seriously considered for these colleges, one must ace many time-consuming AP or IB courses一some students take five or six per year-which eats up all time for fun.
