1. 個人背景
本科：一所普通985高校；碩士：北京一所知名文科大學。專業(yè)：農業(yè)經濟管理
可能大家都應該知道我所在的兩所大學是哪個了。
英語：IELTS（聽力7.5，口語6.5，閱讀9.0，寫作7.5，總分7.5）
GRE：159+166+4.0
GPA：本科：3.76/4.00，碩士3.84/4.00
有幾篇中文核心期刊論文，參加過老師的自科社科項目，也有參加寫國際會議，沒有英文論文。推薦信都是國內老師寫的。

2. 申請學校及錄取情況
具體的項目名稱可能稍有出入，但是不會差太多。我申請的學校，范圍很寬，差距很大，全部是博士項目。下面是相關項目的一些信息，有些信息是來自于師兄師姐的介紹，也是一己之見，可能有不準確之處，只是作為參考，也是為拋磚引玉，希望大家都來發(fā)表意見。
UIUC（Geography）offer
系里分人文地理、GIS、自然地理三個方向，人文地理老師不少，質性和定量都有做的，涉及領域也很廣泛。UIUC地理系在NRC排名上列全美第四，是個不錯的地理系，人文地理方面，環(huán)境政策做得很好。
U of Toronto (Forestry) offer
林業(yè)系里面只有兩個老師在做social science的，一個是林業(yè)經濟，一個是林業(yè)治理（偏社會學和政治學），招生也很少，所以申請之前，需要問老師招不招生。
U of Michigan (Natural Resource Management) rejection
北美四大資源環(huán)境學院之一。這個系非常雜，做什么的都有，但是招生競爭非常激烈。2014年，96人申請，錄了6個人，錄取的人都是全獎。博士項目里面，社科方向只招收2個人左右，競爭激烈，建議申請之前套磁以下。和該院教授交流，教授說如果自己有資金資助，會增加錄取概率，錄取對GRETOEFLGPA成績還是很看重的，當然研究方向的契合是最重要的。

U of Florida (Agricultural Economics; Interdisciplinary Ecology) offer
農經項目，要求學過中級宏微觀計量課程，但實際上沒有太嚴格靠這個卡人。我碩士期間沒有學過中高級宏微觀，但是也錄取了。聽一個師姐說，現在北美農經博士就業(yè)形勢嚴峻，Florida的2014屆農經PhD就業(yè)狀況也不好。據說他家的資格考試不是特別嚴格，通過率比較高。
U of California Davis (Agricultural and Resource Economics) rejection
老牌農經強校，但是似乎這幾年老人退休，新人上馬，處于變動更新期。競爭激烈，200多人申請，最后發(fā)了30個offer，去了20多個，最后資格考試可能還要刷掉一部分人。Davis的錄取也很奇怪，申請結束一個月之后，先發(fā)一批拒信，大約拒掉100多，之后開始發(fā)offer，最后4月份再給其他人發(fā)拒信。
U of Georgia (Housing and Consumer Economics) AD
這個項目純屬試試，自己也沒太放心上，因為本科做過類似課題，所以就申了，后來才知道這個項目還是不錯的。佐治亞的這個項目之前在商學院，后來獨立出來，金融房產消費，就業(yè)前景好。知道的人不多，競爭不激烈。3月初就出結果了，但主要問題是，沒錢。今年這個項目碩士博士招了十幾個人，所有人都沒有獎學金。學校在亞特蘭大，一年學費生活費20—30萬，如果資金不是問題，可以好好考慮下。

U of Connecticut (Agricultural and Resource Economics) AD 轉碩士項目
康涅狄格農經系小而精，資源環(huán)境做的不錯，但是也面臨人員新舊交替。我申請的是博士，但是被轉成了碩士，可能是因為課程不夠的緣故（我沒有學過中級宏微觀經濟學）。據說這個項目finding也不是特別足。
U of Texas A&M (Agricultural Economics) rejection
我被這個項目拒絕之后，發(fā)信詢問原因。負責人告訴我，因為我選了“必須要獎學金”，如果沒錢我也能來，它就給我發(fā)錄取。所以，看來“是否必須要獎學金”這個選項，對于錄取還是有影響的，需要謹慎選擇。但是看論壇上有人是收到了帶獎錄取的，不太清楚里面的獎學金發(fā)放機制。德州學校單獨使用一個錄取系統，操作非常復雜，如果申請德州的學校，務必提早申請，摸清系統的使用規(guī)則。
U of Kentucky (Agricultural Economics) offer
錄取截止日期很晚，結果發(fā)放的非常晚，它家農經也還行，可以作為保底的學校。
U of Guelph (Agricultural and Resource Economics) rejection
學校排名一般，但據說這個項目是加拿大最好的農經博士項目。據說博士招生人數很小，所以競爭非常激烈。他們家有碩士項目，而且是有獎學金的，可以考慮申請碩士項目，作為博士申請?zhí)濉Ｖ霸谡搲锟吹竭^被他家碩士項目錄取的孩子。另外，Guelph和留基委公派項目有合作協議，如果走公派項目，會容易很多。
3. 選校，選擇項目
選校真的非常重要，我覺得應該多花時間在選校上。關于選校，很多帖子都提供了很好的建議。毫無疑問，match是最重要的，如果能夠發(fā)現一個項目，它仿佛是為自己量身定做一般，那么錄取的可能性就很大了。另外，現在經濟學類的申請真是太激烈了，對于自身條件不是特別好的同學，還是不要把目標放得太高。大家都蜂擁而至的項目，還是盡量避開。其實，國外有很多好的項目，但是大家選校的時候，往往都是跟大流，別人選什么，我也選什么，造成中國人扎堆。大家不妨把心儀學校所有的Program的列表都看下，如果有一個項目里面，有和自己研究方向類似的老師，那么就可以考慮申請。之后，可以在網上搜下這個項目的名字，如果發(fā)現，其他人申請的比較少，那么這可能就蘊含著機會。最后，其實經濟管理類，可以跨申的項目非常多，比如我碩士是林經的，不僅可以申農經項目，也可以申資源環(huán)境、生態(tài)學類項目，還可以申林學院里的項目，還可以申環(huán)境社會學等等。我覺得沒有必要把眼光限制在經濟學院里面，雖然經濟學院里對經濟學的訓練，肯定要遠遠好于其他學院，但是經濟學院申請?zhí)ち?，如果其他學院有不錯的導師，也可以考慮。
當然，別人都不申的項目，或許是好東西大家不知道，或者是它本身就不是特別好，所以大家都不去申。所以，大家還是得多花時間，把項目里課程開設情況、排名、師資力量、學校名聲等等都好好看下，這樣一來，找到性價比很高的項目還是不難的。
4. 材料準備
關于材料準備，網上帖子也非常之多，我也就不細說了。我只想提一點，to say is easy, but to do is another. 一定要早點著手開始寫材料！！比如，PS，要早寫，一旦有靈感，就先記錄下來?？梢砸獊韺W長學姐的文書看看，先照葫蘆畫瓢，之后再一點一點改，改完之后就能發(fā)現早已是面目全非，脫胎換骨了。文書絕對不是一蹴而就的，一定要趁早開始做！
關于文書修改的問題，我個人覺得，文書修改還是有必要的。但是，只要改語言就好，結構和內容方面，文書機構真的很難提出多么有用的建議。文書，關鍵還是自己用心寫，不斷完善。另外，文書修改，不一定非找專業(yè)公司，自己的師兄師姐、一起申請的同學也能提供很多好的建議。
5. 一點感想
5.1 什么最重要
我之前一直覺得，什么在申請中最重要？現在想想看，是connection！我的建議是，不管是什么項目，申請之前，最好能夠找到項目里面的老師，問問某個方向招生否，選拔標準是什么。其實，套磁的目的，也是為了實現這個目的。但是，坦率的說，一般的套磁，實在是精力花費大，而且成功率低。相比之下，直接找關系，是個更加簡單的做法。那么，如何發(fā)現connection呢？
第一是多參加學術會議，多和大牛打個照面，其實很管用的，大牛都是平易近人的。一旦看對上眼，就可能有意想不到的機會。第二是深入發(fā)掘周圍人的資源，比如學長學姐出國都去哪里了？學院的導師曾經去哪些學校當過訪問學者，或者拿過學位，或者和國外學校有學術合作？從我的經驗看，師長對于愿意出國讀博的學生，都是非常關照的，也愿意給與幫助。他們完全可以幫忙問下，國外院系的某個導師，招不招生，或者給你引薦一下。
其次，就是個人水平。自身能力的重要性，無需多言，但其實很多時候大家并沒有對此給予足夠重視。我覺得GRE、TOEFL/IELTS、GPA肯定是越高越好，文章越多越好，課程越高級分數越高越好。條件不好，即便導師努力推薦，對方也可能不愿意要。
最后，就是課程。我在課程方面，吃了很多虧。我的教訓是，真的要學習好數學和經濟學課程。我所在的學院，連碩士都是不開高級宏微觀計量的，更別提數學課了，這在申請時簡直是致命的。如果學院不開，自己就要去選修，一定要在課程上，符合對方學院的要求。否則很容易讓對方覺得，你沒有完善的知識體系和研究能力。我申請康涅狄格，之所以被從博士轉為碩士，主要就是課程不足的原因。
6. 關于CSC（國家公派）
我還想提提公派的事情，現在大家對于公派也重視起來，我在這方面，還是有一些心得，在此和大家分享下。
走CSC，需要有兩步。首先按照正常程序申請國外學校（也就是說，你必須符合國外學校的申請要求，參加托福雅思GRE考試等），在拿到國外學校錄取（一般都是免學費或者提供學費的半獎offer）之后，再向留學基金委CSC申請公派獎學金（即生活費）。這里要明確，公派的話國家是只提供生活費的，亦即，對方學校必須同意提供學費，或者免除學費。留學基金委只對極少數量的申請者提供學費。事實上，公派每年也給極少人提供學費，但這需要單獨進行面試，而且錄取率比不申請學費的低很多，所以還是不要輕易嘗試得好。具體規(guī)定，請登錄留學基金委網站，詳細了解，里面的規(guī)定還是非常復雜的。公派，原則上是要求回國服務的，一心想移民的，可能不是很合適走公派。
按這幾年的情況看，拿著美國學校的錄取，走公派的比例是最高的，這主要是因為美國學校多，好學校更多。但這里頭有個問題，大家容易忽視：北美學校的學費普遍較高，而生活費遠低于學費；歐洲則是生活費比較高，學費沒有那么高；而公派，國家提供的是生活費。因此，從學校的角度上看，歐洲學校要比美國學校更喜歡要公派來的中國學生。公派對美國學校，吸引力有限，因為替他省不了太多錢。所以，不要以為拿著美國學校offer申請公派的人多，就覺得要走公派，申美國比歐洲容易。
如果確實想走公派，一種辦法是，申請時不告訴對方自己想走公派，如果對方錄取了，并且給了免除學費或者是覆蓋學費的獎學金，但是沒有提供學費，那么自己再申請公派。第二種辦法是，申請的時就直接告訴對方自己想走公派，國家可以提供生活費，這樣對方學?？赡苡X得它只需要提供學費就行，因而更愿意錄取你（只是可能）。
如果你申請的是歐洲學校，那么只需要讓對方導師按照留學基金委出錄取信就可以了。據我所知，歐洲很多學校是有個大老板，大老板負責下面所有博士，博士實際不是一般學生，而是employer，錄取信也是由大老板出，這樣只要搞定大老板就好了。但是，美國學校比較麻煩，美國學校的博士錄取是非常標準化的，需要committee和研究生院的審批，而不是只由導師決定的，對于文科、社科類專業(yè)更是如此。這就造成一個問題，美國學校，可能不會完全依照留學基金委的要求出具錄取信，而且，它們很難做出妥協。比如：學校出具的錄取信，可能是這么寫的：
“如果你能拿到公派錄取，我們可能/通常會會免除學費?！?br>但是，這實際不符合留學基金委的要求，“可能/通常會”類似的字眼，很容易給人一種感覺：即便學生拿到公派，學校也不一定負責學費。
那么，學校為什么要出具這樣一個邀請函呢？我的理解是，這樣可以降低學校，萬一因為某種特殊原因無法提供學費，而可能肩負的法律責任。加了“可能/通常會”，即便未來因為資金緊張，學校無法給你提供學費了，那么它也不會承擔法律責任，因為它已經在錄取信中為自己留有了余地。但是，這實際上是將風險轉嫁給了留學基金委和學生。小木蟲上，就曾看到過有學生控訴，美國學校只免了博士第一年的學費，第二年不負責學費了，結果學生不知該怎么辦。
我的建議是，在申請美國學校的時候，沒有必要提前告訴人家，自己要走公派。在和老師套磁時，可以先看看老師的態(tài)度，如果老師想要你，那么他可能會給你提供全獎，如果他想要你，但是funding不夠，那么他一般會直接告訴你原因，這時你再告訴他，你可以申請公派，學校無需負擔生活費。
最后，我覺得，其實公派并不會給你申請北美名校帶來特別多的優(yōu)勢。因為名校注重的是學生質量，它不會因為有CSC提供生活費，自己可以少出點錢，而錄取一個不合適的學生，而且對于北美名校來說，學費要遠比生活費高多了，CSC誘惑很小。但是對于申請歐洲學校來說，公派還是能夠讓對方更感興趣的。另外，一些學校是與CSC有合作項目的，比如UCLA, USC, UT, UBC等名校。走合作項目，可能會增加申請成功的幾率，但要被錄取，還是要符合對方學校要求，而這些要求也是不低的。
最最后，如果大家想了解公派，請去小木蟲論壇，里面的公派留學版塊是公派申請者的大本營。另外，現在公派申請難度是一年比一年大，申請公派的過程也是相當繁瑣，中間需要注意的事情也很多，大家都要有心理準備。畢竟，國家的錢也不是那么好拿的。
7. 關于IELTS和TOEFL
關于雅思和托福，大家都知道，現在二者適用性差異已經很小了，即大多數北美學校都認可雅思，而多數歐洲澳洲學校也認可托福，但是，我還是誠懇的告訴大家，如果真的決定以北美為主，還是堅定的考TOEFL吧，不要考雅思。
北美對于IETLS的歧視是非常明顯的，比如Connell的農經根本就不認可雅思，多高都沒用。還有一些學校，比如俄亥俄州立，很多項目托福只要100，而雅思要求8，這幾乎是告訴你，死了心去考托福吧。還有加拿大的多倫多大學，雅思總分7，單科6.5 但是托福才93，很明顯，考托福也是有優(yōu)勢的。因此，如果去北美，堅定考托福吧。
最后，申請還是很不容易的，大家都要有心理準備，希望大家能堅持下去。我其實條件不是很好，中間也遇到過很多打擊，有時候都準備二戰(zhàn)。和我一起申請的同學，有的非常優(yōu)秀，但是因為各種原因，結果也不是很好。但是，人生是個馬拉松，中間的波折，在日后回頭看去，都不算什么。希望大家都有信心，都能堅持。和我一起申請的那個同學，準備今年繼續(xù)申請，也祝她能成功，祝大家都一路順利！

Mr. Wang and I have often talked about a variety of mathematics and computer science concepts and problems. During these discussions I always found him to be delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems and present solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang's thinking is intensely rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately. I believe this kind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor?I had a first-hand opportunity to observe the way in which Wang's mind works. In his senor thesis Mr. Wang mainly discussed two challenging questions in regards to″ANN″. In our books in China knowledge of ANN and its uses are very rare. Few people in China have studied this topic and consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited. Working on this difficult project not only did Mr. Wang rise to the challenge but he went above and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test them for accuracy in practice. In this way?he found mistakes in the book that we use. His diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.

Mr. Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual. Teaching and advising him has been a delightful pleasure. 一般留學申請時的推薦信需要2-3封，也就是要找2-3個推薦人。普遍的做法是老師寫好內容，然后你自己去翻譯成英語，也可以自己寫好找老師簽字，只要你的老師認可這種做法就行。不管你用哪種方法，首先要找一個好的推薦人。推薦人必須要非常熟悉申請者，能從比較全面的角度了解申請者。

一般來說，申請者是不能看到推薦信內容的。但是在和推薦人詳談時可以先交代下所申請的學校注重什么樣的特質。通篇都是溢美之詞而沒有實例佐證的推薦信也不是錄取委員希望看到的，所以推薦信的內容一定要和自己寫的個人陳述、簡歷細節(jié)一致。
推薦信主要由以下幾項構成：
推薦人和申請者的關系，是任課教授？還是實習的mentor？
熟悉程度：比如任課的教授教過2-3門課，而且是課程論文的指導老師。
申請者的優(yōu)勢和長處；優(yōu)秀的學術成績和研究能力；工作中的杰出表現；特殊才能，比如藝術、體育、技藝等。這些特質都需要有實例的支撐，列舉一些具體數據和細節(jié)，能讓錄取委員會從實例中看到申請人的優(yōu)秀的特質。也可以采用適當的對比，通過同平級的人相比，來突出申請者的優(yōu)勢。
注意事項：

至于學校老師推薦信，建議一個選擇與所申請專業(yè)相關或相近的專業(yè)課老師，借他來向招生官展示你的學術學習與研究所需的能力，比如，申請金融專業(yè)，如果你是金融專業(yè)學生，那么自然可以選擇金融專業(yè)課老師之一;如果你是非金融商科專業(yè)學生，那么可以選擇相關的商科專業(yè)課，比如宏微觀經濟學;或者是其他非商科專業(yè)，那么盡量選能夠體現你數理分析能力的課程，這是要學好金融所必須的特質;當然，如果沒有，你可以選擇你的本科專業(yè)課老師之一，通過實例講解，體現你的學習能力、分析能力之類的。

另外一個選擇可以選擇像班主任、系主任、輔導員這類老師。

因為他們是與你有接觸的前提條件下，又是對你整體情況比較了解的人。

通過他們的推薦信，來向學校展示你的不同于學習方面的.能力。

比如，如果你申請傳媒專業(yè)，可以通過課外活動的事例，來體現你的團隊溝通能力、交際能力等等之類的。

而實習單位上司，我們也一般建議，也是美國學校有時會提到的直屬上司。

這個要求，其實很好理解的。

因為你，只有走直屬上司，才是更加了解你的工作內容、工作狀態(tài)、工作表現的。

因此，他才更有發(fā)言權來說你的能力特點，并且，能夠對這些特點的相關事例，如數家珍。

不然，推薦信的說服力就不足了。

I have known Mr.Caleb for more than 6 years since his freshman year at "University ofMinnesota".

At that time, he took the course-- "MathematicalAnalysis," which I taught mainly for junior students majoring inMathematics.

To my surprise, I found he was among the few students in his classwho could keep up with the pace of my lectures.

Moreover, he often posedthought-provoking questions during the course.

Thus it was natural that I likeddiscussing with this young man and became familiar with him.

As to hispersonality, I would like to say Mr.Caleb is a warm-hearted, honest andupright student.

He was always ready to help others.

During my lectures, manystudents got confused at some points and I could always see Mr.Caleb help themexplain during breaks.

In the meanwhile, I must admit that Mr.Caleb was a bitimpatient sometimes.
